  1. Pictures in HIV/AIDS education (AIDucation) is about a true life experience or story of an African doctor. It is about a Zambian doctor,Dr Edwin Mapara, who worked at The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) of Zambia and then moved on to Livingstone General Hospital (Batoka) in Zambia. Dr Edwin Mapara re-located and finally worked at Athlone Hospital in Botswana, from 1990 to 2002. He was key in setting up programmes to address AIDS in Botswana. It is simply a true story about living together with people living with or affected by HIV infections or terminal AIDS. This true story is still happening everyday across Africa.

It is about 19 years (1983-2002) of experience in a world of AIDS in Zambia and Botswana, before the arrival of the antiretroviral “ARVs” drugs and then 5 years (2002-2007) experience in London teaching on PICTURES IN AIDUCATION, England.

AIDucation is about talking to community members on sexually transmitted infections by using pictures, videos or films. It is community empowerment through the eyes, it is about seeing AIDS. The story is told mostly through visuals and colour images. There is an African saying that says, “Seeing is very different from being told!” To many people in the villages and the towns of Africa AIDS is invisible and what PICTURES IN AIDUCATION does is to make AIDS visible.

Who has used this teaching style?

    1. Teachers in schools for teaching proper sex education and relationships amongst the young people.

    2. Faith communities who lacked the “knowledge, wisdom and understanding” on matters related to sexually transmitted infections and AIDS.

    3. Politicians to gain insight into AIDS in a simple language for policy formulation and to engage in public talks.

    4. Lecturers in Health Promotion and Public Health at the universities to impart a “unique” health promotion intervention style especially for the developing countries.

    5. Volunteers going to Africa from Europe.

AIDucation is about HIV infections and AIDS in the villages, the schools, the workplaces, churches and mosques. AIDucation is about the day to day beliefs, cultures, stories, myths, facts and activities around AIDS in Africa, which is very different from approaches in the western world.

This book is worth it, for any person going to Africa or the developing countries to give a ‘helping hand’ in HIV infection prevention, care and support for living with HIV. This book is for anyone who wants an insight into or to picture ‘African AIDS.’

“Seeing is very different from being told” and therefore the book called PICTURES IN AIDUCATION.
